Rekey after buying a house in Las Vegas before the moving truck leaves: on a new-construction tract home in the southwest valley the builder’s construction keys, sales-office keys and every trade’s copy may still turn your locks, and on a resale the previous owner’s spares are never all accounted for. Go Locksmith Las Vegas rekeys every keyed exterior cylinder in one visit, resets the garage keypad, and tells you which two openings a locksmith cannot touch (the HOA vehicle gate and the cluster mailbox) so you can chase those credentials before closing. The whole job is quoted upfront before a van is dispatched.

This guide covers what builder keys are on 2000s to 2020s Las Vegas tract homes, what Nevada’s resale rules transfer and what they do not, and a door-by-door checklist. Weighing a rekey against new hardware? That decision is in the rekey or replace guide. For the service itself, see residential locksmith or call (702) 827-5962.

What “builder keys” mean on a southwest Las Vegas tract home

A builder key is a construction key: one key that opened every house in the phase while framers, painters and the sales office needed access. (Plain words for what follows: the cylinder is the part of the lock the key goes into, the plug is the piece that turns, and the keyway is the shape of the slot.) Two systems dominate the homes Go Locksmith Las Vegas sees in Enterprise, Mountain’s Edge, Southern Highlands and Silverado Ranch, and they cancel the construction key in opposite ways.

Kwikset SmartKey. Kwikset launched SmartKey at the 2008 International Builders’ Show and put it in all of its boxed keyed-entry products in 2009. The pitch to builders: rekey a lock in under 30 seconds without pulling it off the door, replacing a “potentially compromised or outdated key” at each construction phase. KB Home put SmartKey in its newly opened projects from 2010 and trained walkthrough reps to rekey the locks with the buyer so the new owner is the only key holder. The catch: the reset needs the current working key plus the SmartKey tool, and it cancels keys only for the cylinders the rep actually reset. A garage service door or side gate from a different supplier stays on whatever key it shipped with.

Schlage lost-ball construction keying. Schlage’s residential system puts three or four tiny ball bearings in one pin chamber. The construction key lines them up so the plug turns; the first turn of the deactivating key (the homeowner’s change key, or the master key if there is one) drops the balls into a side hole and the construction key is dead for good. Allegion limits it to residential projects on the 5-pin C keyway and warns builders not to use the homeowner key during construction. The catch is the mirror image of SmartKey: the system is self-cancelling, but only if the key you were handed at closing is the deactivating key. A copy cut from the construction key is not.

SystemHow the construction key is cancelledWhat can still be wrong on move-in dayWhat Go Locksmith Las Vegas does
Kwikset SmartKey (homes finished from about 2008 on)Rep or owner resets with the working key and the SmartKey toolDoors the rep skipped; a jammed reset; keys cut before the resetResets every SmartKey cylinder to one new key, or swaps in conventional pinned cylinders
Schlage lost-ball construction keyingFirst use of the homeowner’s deactivating key drops the ballsYou were handed a construction-key copy; locks outside the system (gates, casita, garage service door)Confirms the construction key is dead, re-pins everything to one key, keys the outliers alike
Conventional pinned cylinders (most homes finished before about 2008, and many resales, where the previous owner’s spares are the risk)Nothing, until the cylinder is re-pinnedEvery spare the previous owner, agent, cleaner or contractor ever cutRe-pins each cylinder, cuts new keys, tests that the old keys fail

Which era is your house?

In southwest Las Vegas, the hardware on a front door tracks the year the house was finished, and the south and southwest ZIPs lean toward one decade each. ACS-derived estimates (Census table B25034 via a ZIP aggregator) put roughly 9,100 of the 15,750 homes in 89183 (Silverado Ranch south, Enterprise) in the 2000 to 2009 build window and about 4,500 in the 1990s; in 89123 about 13,700 of 26,300 units date from the 1990s and 7,300 from the 2000s. What Go Locksmith Las Vegas usually finds: a 1990s house carries conventional pinned Kwikset or Schlage cylinders, often the originals, with worn keyways that make the rekey the right moment to replace a cylinder too; a house finished through 2007 is a late conventional set, and a 2008 or 2009 house may be first-generation SmartKey; a 2010s or 2020s house in Mountain’s Edge, Southern Highlands or the newer Enterprise phases is often SmartKey or a keypad deadbolt from the builder’s upgrade sheet, though some builders specify Schlage, and the question is whether anyone ran the reset.

Gate remotes, transponders and HOA access: what Nevada actually transfers

Nevada’s resale rule for homes in an HOA is NRS 116.4109. The seller must furnish a resale package at the seller’s expense: the declaration, bylaws and rules, a statement of the monthly assessment, the budget and financials, any unsatisfied judgments or pending lawsuits, and transfer fees. The association has 10 calendar days to produce it, and the buyer can cancel until midnight of the fifth calendar day after receiving it. Notice what the statute lists: documents. It says nothing about keys, garage remotes, gate clickers or windshield transponders, and neither does the Seller’s Real Property Disclosure (Nevada Real Estate Division Form 547), which covers the condition of the house.

That gap matters in gated southwest Las Vegas communities, and two separate facts explain it. The fire code covers only emergency access: Clark County’s 2024 fire code amendments (Section 503.6.3, effective January 2026) require electronically controlled gates on fire apparatus roads to carry a vehicle detector and receiver for fire apparatus and, when the fire code official asks, a key-switch override, and the fire department may hand transmitters to law enforcement and ambulance crews. Resident credentials are a different system: they are issued by the sub-association, not by a locksmith, so if the remotes and transponders were not handed over at closing, the path is the association office, which deactivates the old devices and registers yours.

Go Locksmith Las Vegas tells southwest Las Vegas buyers to do two things before closing. Put “all house keys, garage remotes, gate remotes and transponders” in the purchase contract’s personal-property list in writing and confirm the wording with your agent, because NRS 116.4109 does not require them. And ask the post office, not a locksmith, for cluster-mailbox keys: the lock the carrier uses on a community mailbox is USPS property and is not serviced by locksmiths.

The move-in checklist by door type

Go Locksmith Las Vegas builds every move-in quote from this list, because the doors people forget are the ones used against them. “Rekey” means re-pin to a new key, “replace” means new hardware, “re-register” means a credential only a third party can issue.

How Go Locksmith Las Vegas runs a move-in rekey

  1. Count by cylinder, not by door. A knob and a deadbolt are two cylinders; the dispatcher asks for the count and the brand stamped on each face so the right pin kits and blanks are in the van.
  2. Verify the new owner. Photo ID plus a closing document, deed or lease. No proof, no rekey. The technician who asks is background-checked, and the company is insured.
  3. Re-pin and key alike where the keyway allows. Kwikset KW1 and Schlage SC1 do not mix, so a mixed house gets one cylinder swapped rather than two key rings forever.
  4. Clear the garage opener and reset the keypad code on the same visit.
  5. Prove it. Old keys are tried in every lock to confirm they fail; the new key is tried with each door closed, because a deadbolt that binds on a sun-warped slab is a separate repair.

Customer reviews of related work on Go Locksmith Las Vegas’s Google profile show the two shapes a move-in job takes. D Kent described a whole-house hardware swap, “2 deadbolts and 3 doorknobs to be put on”; Sarah Rose described a rekey, the technician “did a excellent job rekeying 2 of my locks.” The forgotten doors in the checklist generate their own calls later: Kirsten Violette, “Opened my garage”; Kathy, “helped me out with my shed late at night.”

Frequently asked questions about rekeying after buying a house in Las Vegas

Do I need to rekey a brand-new house if the builder says the locks were reset?

Ask which doors. A SmartKey reset cancels keys only for the cylinders that were reset, and a Schlage lost-ball system cancels the construction key only when the real deactivating key is first used. Go Locksmith Las Vegas confirms every exterior cylinder, including the garage service door and gates, in one visit.

Can a locksmith program my gate transponder in a gated southwest Las Vegas community?

No. In southwest Las Vegas vehicle-gate credentials are issued by each sub-association, and the fire code’s gate rules cover only emergency access for fire apparatus. Register devices at the HOA office; Go Locksmith Las Vegas handles pedestrian gates, the casita and the house doors.

Does the Nevada resale package include the keys and remotes?

No. NRS 116.4109 lists governing documents, assessments, budgets, litigation and fees, and does not require keys, garage remotes or gate devices. Put them in the purchase contract’s personal-property list and confirm the wording with your agent before closing.

Should I rekey or replace the locks on a 1990s house in Silverado Ranch or Spring Valley?

Go Locksmith Las Vegas rekeys a 1990s Las Vegas lock if the cylinders turn smoothly, and replaces the cylinder or the lock if the keyway is worn, the deadbolt binds, or you want a keypad. The quote covers both options before work starts.

What do I need to show the locksmith on move-in day?

Photo ID and proof you own or lease the home. Go Locksmith Las Vegas sends a technician to any Las Vegas address in a marked van with ID and gives one upfront quote by phone for the whole job.
